Britto Bisso wins Open Biology's Open Questions Competition

Frank Britto Bisso, a first-year CPCB student in Christian Cuba Samaniego’s lab, is the winner of the 2024 Open Questions competition with Open Biology. Frank, in collaboration with Master of Science in Automated Science student Yinan Zhu and Professor Christian Cuba Samaniego, set out to answer a fundamental question: “How do cells make decisions?”

By combining ideas from machine learning with biology, they were better able to understand the computational capabilities of living systems. They explored concepts such as decision boundaries and weights and found that some chemical reactions common in biology behave like activation functions.

Using the idea of neuromorphic computation, the researchers hope to design more intelligent systems for advanced therapeutics and to further the field of bio-inspired computation. They believe that focusing on computations in living systems can inspire new approaches to improve current algorithms.
